Bio Base Pack Europe
Since the end of 2017, BioBase Pack Europe has been producing a globally unique biodegradable plastic from materials developed by parent company HemCell® in a building on the Nishoek industrial estate in Kruiningen. HemCell® is the BV in which the various patents for the unique technology are housed.
The special feature of products from HemCell® bioplastic is that they do not have to be broken down in a factory (so-called “Industrial composting”), but are automatically composted when they come into contact with the open air (so-called: cold soil compostable or home compostable) Within 6 to 12 months, depending on the thickness of the product, nothing is left of it. The product also has a competitive business model based on common (petroleum-based) plastics.
Support with regard to establishment and funding
Invest in Zeeland has supported the company in terms of business location with, among other things, finding a suitable location and obtaining permits. In addition, HemCell® bv was supported in the early stages of product development with financing from the InnoGo !, fund that supports innovative start-ups and SMEs. In 2017, the Zeeuws Participatiefonds/ Zeeland Participation Fund (indirectly) became a shareholder in both HemCell® and BioBase Pack Europe via the so-called InCrowd Fund HemCell + II bv, an equally innovative fund model of HemCell® itself. Both Invest in Zeeland and InnoGo! are part of the regional development company NV Economische Impuls Zeeland (Impuls).
“Through the input of Invest in Zeeland and InnoGo! we became eligible for an OP-South Knowledge Check. With that money we have been able to do tests and research. We also received funding via InnoGo! and from the Zeeland Participation Fund.
The value of Invest in Zeeland was enormous, because they offer direct access to the network. The collaboration was very efficient and friendly. Invest in Zeeland helps entrepreneurs like myself to achieve their goals."
Why Zeeland is the perfect location for Bio Base Pack Europe
“Bio Base Pack Europe does business all over the world, also in Asia. The plant in Zeeland is the most important factory, both in Europe and worldwide, because the R&D takes place here.
The advantage of this location in Zeeland is that there is virtually no traffic congestion. We are located right in the middle of the ports of Rotterdam and Antwerp.
It is an advantage for our staff that they do not have to travel far. If we want to hire personnel in the future, we can draw on a large pool in Terneuzen, which is there for the petrochemical industry, as well as in Vlissingen. I firmly believe that many of those people would like to work for an innovative company like ours.”
