Schouwen-Duiveland: figures and facts

Schouwen-Duiveland is the northernmost island of Zeeland. In addition to the historic towns of Zierikzee and Brouwershaven it has fifteen villages and eleven hamlets. The island is completely surrounded by water, its beach along the North Sea coast spans 21 kilometres; Oosterschelde National Park, and the Grevelingenmeer (Grevelingen Lake). Recreation is important for the economy. It stimulates the quality of life and helps to preserve facilities.

Accessibility

Within 45 minutes you are in the centre of Rotterdam. The island has two fixed links with Goeree-Overflakkee in the north: the Brouwersdam and the Grevelingendam. The Oosterscheldekering (Oosterschelde Barrier) and the Zeelandbrug (Zeeland Bridge) provide a good connection with the rest of Zeeland. 

 

Business Activity

The island Schouwen-Duiveland has no high-rise buildings or large industrial complexes. Still, it has attracted companies that are innovative and international in scope, as well as a relatively large number of companies and start-ups in the digital field. The community is characterised by strong mutual involvement, a welcoming attitude and a high degree of creativity amongst its artists and companies.
