Vlissingen: facts and figures

The municipality of Vlissingen consists of the city of Vlissingen and the villages of Oost-Souburg, West-Souburg and Ritthem. Vlissingen is a maritime city situated at the Westerschelde estuary in the North Sea. Every day, large vessels pass right by the boulevards. Living and working by the sea makes the people of Vlissingen tough and down to earth.

At some distance from the city you will find the industrial and port area of Vlissingen-Terneuzen, the third port in the Netherlands after Rotterdam and Amsterdam. It is a strategic location in the international transport sector and of great significance for the economy.  There are good connections with the hinterland via the A58 motorway, the railway as well as good inland shipping connections.


Business Activity

High-grade industry and port-related businesses are established in the Sloe port area. It is an important fruit transit port, with various companies that are specialised in storage, transhipment and processing of fruit. The Kenniswerf(knowledge exchange centre) is being developed around the HZ University of applied Sciences and ROC Scalda (regional education centre) to facilitate the cooperation between companies and educational institutes.

As of 2015, a marine station in the ports of Vlissingen will be completed.
